Sometimes when it is raining or storming, we don't want to take our dog out on walks but we don't want them becoming destructive or a pest at home from boredom.
When it is raining and your dog is stuck inside, there are heaps of fun things that you can do together or that your dog can do alone to be kept entertained no matter if the rain is lasting hours or days.
1. Use your dogs meals as enrichment.
Enrichment can come in many forms, but by feeding your dog in interactive ways that gets them thinking, it not only keeps them occupied for the length of time that it takes them to work for their meals but also provides them with a heap of mental stimulation.
Puzzle toys, snuffle mats and nosework games are all great options.
2. Do a training session!
It doesn't matter what skill you work on with your dog, just that they are engaged and enjoy it. It is another form of mental stimulation and also benefits as a bonding experience between the both of you.
3. Hide and seek.
You can hide yourself in another room and let your dog find you, or hide one of their favourite toys. They get to use their nose which will help keep them entertained and tired!
4. Let your dog trash things (if safe to do so).
If your dog likes tearing things to shreds and they don't swallow what they chew on, you can give them some of your recycling like cardboard boxes, empty toilet paper rolls and egg cartons to shred. You can make it even more fun by putting some treats inside that they need to get to.
5. Set up an indoor agility course!
You can use household items like a broom or mop as a hurdle or to lure your dog underneath, cushions as platforms for your dog to stand on and so much more. You can get really creative with it! It is mental stimulation and exercise in one.
